A Trip to Wales

A couple of days later Art and I were asked to deliver some spare parts to the RAF coastal command station at St. David's on the South west corner of Wales, over looking the Irish Sea. Our flight across England took us over the heavy industrial cities of Manchester and Birmingham. Although it was a beautiful clear day we couldn't see these cities due to the thick smog caused by the pottery kilns and factory smoke stacks. Upon landing our fully armed and operation Beaufighter. I called the tower and asked where I could park. They told me to stay put and they would send someone out to direct me in.

Unfortunately by the time the Welsh member of the Army Service Corp. arrived in this jeep my tail wheel tire had gone flat. I dropped the door hatch and the Welsh man climbed up the ladder and poked his head in the cockpit. He spoke to me in Welsh and I to him in English so I called the tower again and asked to be towed in to the maintenance hanger. They had decided they didn't want me to stay because the aircraft was fully armed, and couldn't seem to appreciate the flat tire problem. Quite an argument developed between the Welsh jeep driver and myself before he finally went back to get the tow tractor. After calling back to base we found out Art and I would have to stay over until they flew in a replacement tire in the morning.

That evening Art and I decided to go into St. David's to take in the sights. The town was built on the side of a hill with all the main streets being up or down depending on the way you were headed. After seeing all the interesting things like the harbour and the town square we headed for the Cinema to take in a Laurel and Hardy classic. While waiting for the feature to commence we had to sit on hard benches and watch while they showed slide advertisements for all the local stores. After that exhibition they turned on the single light bulb dangling from the ceiling while the ushers went up and down the aisle peddling numerous goodies. After watching the scratchy film, sleeping on a lumpy bed, and waiting around for the spare tire, we were glad to be on our way back to North Coates the next afternoon.
