Lief Larsen

Several years later we learned a lot more about the life of Lief Larsen, the Captain of the Shetland Bus, who risked his life and that of his crew continually as they ran arms and men to Norway from their base in the Shetlands and rescued refugees from under the noses of the occupation army. Lief Larsen, a Norwegian sailor, was awarded more British war medals than any other British serviceman in the Second World War.

An odd incident happened to Harvey Firestone on the eve of a trip back to Norway in 1979. While working out at a health club he was discussing his upcoming trip with a friend, and his comments were overheard by another chap in the gym who approached Harvey and said that he too had been in Norway during the war. As it turned out he was a German who had been stationed in Bergen during the war as a quartermaster in the German army. After our crash he, along with hundreds of others, were taken from their regular work to aid in the search for us. He said he spent a very miserable four days searching in vain before a large garrison of regular troops were brought in. He told Harvey the Germans had over four thousand troops looking for us at one time.
