Thursday Oct 3

Following a day in which most of the Canadian visitors were tourists in Bergen, or in some cases just arriving in Bergen, a few got together at the Bors Hotel to meet each other for the first time or to renew old acquaintances, sharing introductions for a few minutes before heading back to Os.

Doug Deeth and Rick Firestone had planned to meet Bjarne Øvredal, Mats Hjelle and Gaute Dyrdal to review some of the plans for the weekend and finalize some of the details. Mats picked up Rick, and Bjarne picked up Doug, from their respective accommodations and took them on a surprise trip to Hatvik, a beautiful small cove on the north shore of the Fusafjorden. It’s now a ferry terminal for the ferry to Fusa on the south side, but during WWII the Germans had a significant U-boat training base there. The U-boats were hard to see, and even harder to attack, nestled up against the dark cliff on the north {(left) side of the harbor.

Below, courtesy of Google Earth, are some images of the site of the submarine base at Hatvik. In the image on the right, the submarines would be docked against the cliff on the right side of the harbour.

We then headed for dinner in Os, enjoying beer and pizza at Peppe/s Pizza while we sorted out some of the final details of the weekend. As we sat down at our table, we found our two RCAF representatives, Lt. Col. Patrick Castonguay and CWO Serge Harvey sitting a couple of tables away. They had met Rick Firestone before, and had visited Harvey Firestone shortly before their trip to Norway. The rest of us introduced ourselves and they moved over to our table for the meal.
