Funding from the Municipality of Os
As the planning for the 75th Anniversary of the crash progressed, the organizers in Norway learned that the number of Canadians who planned to attend this event would be significantly higher than at previous anniversary celebrations, where only a small number of Canadians were in attendance. The increase in numbers was due in large part to the emphasis in Canada on the 75th anniversary of D-Day and the landing of Canadian troops at Juno Beach, but also to the efforts of Rick Firestone to track down members of the families of the crew members and to encourage them to attend.
The organizers, working through Os Turlag, Os Rotary and Os Sodelag approached the local Os municipality for financial assistance for the repair of the Snogg, for transportation during the celebrations and for catering at a Saturday night dinner as Oseana. (It was at one time expected that the Snogg would be capable of carrying all of the Canadian visitors as well as some local organizer and officials.)
After a short debate it was agreed that the municipality of Os would donate NK100,000 to support the events of the weekend. Once again, Canadian visitors were indebted to the people of Os for their hospitality and friendship, although this time on a much happier occasion.
Below is a note about the decision to make these funds available.
